Pineapple Award for Millers Quay

Millers Quay, the transformational residential scheme at Wirral Waters, Birkenhead, has won the Building Award at this year’s Pineapple Awards.

The Pineapple Awards celebrate great places that thrive and were set up by The Developer in partnership with the Design Council in 2019.

Winning the Building Award category, our design of the £130m development has transformed a former dockland site into a thriving, inclusive waterfront neighbourhood. Collaborating with client Peel Waters and working closely with contractors Graham, we referenced the area’s working heritage, drawing from the industrial character of Birkenhead’s 19th-century docks and the eye-catching vessels of local shipbuilders, creating a new identity for the area.

The judges said: “This project is a catalyst – bringing people, investment and homes to a once-desolate landscape through bold regeneration, striking architecture and extraordinary ambition. The judges applaud the challenges overcome, celebrate the initiative of training and employment at the local construction college, and recognise the potential that this colourful project signals. What was once an empty site is now a busy, lived-in place.”

Alan McCartney, Partner at Howells, added: “We’re thrilled that Millers Quay has been recognised with a Pineapple Award. Thanks to our exceptional client team and everyone involved in making the project happen on-site. What we imagined eight years ago is exactly what stands today, and we’re proud to see the quality of the homes completed, and to be a successful part of the transformational legacy continuing at Wirral Waters.”
