Assay Studios

Built in 1877, Birmingham’s Assay Office was one of the four original Assay Offices in the UK. Our challenge was to take this historic building, which had been intensively used and altered over time, and creatively regenerate it into a modern workplace.

The original building’s formal rooms, safes and vaults are protected under its Grade II listing. Now restored, the spaces create a series of dramatic meeting and collaboration rooms. Workspaces for large and small businesses comprise the office’s former labs, workshops and administration spaces.

Rough and raw with hints of brass, aluminium and steel, the interior finishes reflect the building’s 240-year history and industrial past. Bottle green glazed ceramic tiles acknowledge the previous existing tiles and provide a vibrant contrast set against the exposed brickwork and dark metals.
