Simon Pope – Project Architect of the Year

RIBA West Midlands Awards triple

We’re thrilled to have been awarded two RIBA West Midlands Awards and Project Architect of the Year award for Simon Pope at last night’s ceremony.

One Centenary Way picks up another award and is a pivotal building within the Paradise redevelopment. The next-generation office space is provided within a highly rational and sustainable building where reduced embodied carbon has been considered from the outset, from production to delivery and construction, making it one of the greenest workplace buildings in the region.

In recognition of his work in delivering this complex project our Associate, Simon Pope, was also named RIBA West Midlands Project Architect of the Year.

The jury noted that the project was “literally founded on thin air. More than just an office building, it is also a bridge, or more accurately, a series of bridges spanning across the tunnel. The story is amazing. It is a feat of architecture, engineering and construction, a truly collaborative effort, led by an ambitious and forward-thinking client. literally founded on thin air. Meanwhile, Courtyard Kitchen in rural Worcestershire, has been celebrated for its contemporary enhancement and delicate touch on the National Trust’s Grade-I listed Hanbury Hall. Our work at Hanbury carefully bridges between old and new by introducing accessible entrances and routes, enhancing visitor experience, reinventing settings for food, retail and education and proudly showcasing a continuity of English craft skills and building traditions. Our seamlessly contemporary tile-clad pavilion—connected to the main house via the lightest touch of a glazed vestibule—reinforces and animates a historic service courtyard with new public-facing café life.

The jury “found this to be an extremely well-executed project, with a rich and sustainable material language that enlivens and rejuvenates the rear courtyard. It enables the National Trust to do so much more with Hanbury Hall than before – as well as being a wonderful place to have tea and cake.”

Partner Sandeep Shambi praised the teams involved in both schemes: “We are honoured to have received two RIBA Awards in recognition of our recently completed projects. These achievements highlight the dedication, creativity, and meticulous attention to detail demonstrated by our team. Through a deeply collaborative process—working alongside clients, engineers, makers, and the wider design teams—we have delivered transformational spaces that enrich the lives of those who experience them."
