Pinwheel arrangement
200 West Coast Highway
Just 250 metres from Scarborough Beach, 200 West Coast Highway takes its cues from the climate and character of Western Australia’s coastline.
With its wide white sands and rolling surf, Scarborough blends relaxed beach culture with destination energy. Meadpoint saw an opportunity to create homes at a density appropriate to the town’s sustainable growth. We worked closely with local practice Plus Studio to develop a response that draws from the town’s coastal character.
Rather than a conventional plan, the building’s distinctive pinwheel carves out four distinct elements wrapped around a central core, allowing light and air to flow and creating a fully 360 building with perspectives across the ocean and downtown. The building’s sculptural yet playful form draws on the rhythm and natural undulations of Scarborough’s coastline and the town’s Art Deco history.
Deep, curved balconies, oriented toward both the coastline and the city, create a distinctive form that echoes the undulating waves. Providing space for outdoor living and alfresco dining, they also act as a protective veil, shading and sheltering the apartments. A robust material palette will withstand the demands of the coastal environment.
Built for community, the project marks a new milestone in Australia’s rental market, offering high-quality market and affordable keyworker homes. In this vertical neighbourhood, residents can enjoy shared spaces throughout the building, culminating in a rooftop lounge and pool with ocean views. At ground level, a pocket park will create a green urban place for residents and the local community.
Contextual and respectful, 200 West Coast Highway will be a calm addition to Scarborough’s beautiful coastline, emerging naturally from the dunes and the ocean. Our design shows that despite preconceived notions, high-density development can remain grounded and local.
