Reopening Kidderminster’s civic stage
Once the centre of civic life, commerce and culture, Kidderminster Town Hall has been restored to reconnect the town with its heritage and create renewed focus for its future.
Kidderminster Town Hall
For over 170 years, Kidderminster Town Hall has been woven into the life of the town—from the prosperity of the carpet trade to Kidderminster’s Big Beat Sessions that drew world-famous performers to its stage. As the town evolved, the Grade II-listed building remained a powerful civic symbol, but one in need of renewal.
Working with Wyre Forest District Council, we’ve restored and reimagined the Town Hall as an inclusive, adaptable destination that places community and culture back at the centre of local life. Rather than preserving the building as a static monument, we’ve opened it up, inviting the community to use it in new ways and make it their own.
Restore and enhance
The Town Hall complex comprises two buildings, built between 1853 and 1876. The original houses a Music Hall and Corn Exchange, while the latter holds facilities for the Town’s municipal functions. Our first step was to bring the two together.
A new central courtyard connects and reunites the two buildings, forming a shared civic space at the heart of the scheme. Its woven canopy roof and crafted tiled floor reference the town’s textile heritage, translating local history into a contemporary setting for events, performances and everyday gatherings. By day, a light-filled and open space to congregate; by night, an atmospheric venue at the centre of town life.
A programme of restoration and contemporary intervention work in dialogue to restore the original Music Hall as a high-quality performance space. Significant historic features are carefully repaired and revealed, from removing steps around the significant William Hill organ to introducing new elements, including a flying stage truss, with clarity and confidence.
Developed in partnership with elected members and conservation specialists, the programme of restorations and enhancements will ensure the building is accessible, flexible and resilient—capable of supporting a wide range of community uses for decades to come.
A cultural and civic hub
As part of a nationwide programme of town-centre renewal supported government funding, the project plays a key role in revitalising the high street and reinforcing the civic core. By securing the future of this much-loved building, the evolution of Kidderminster Town Hall can deliver lasting social value and economic prosperity—a civic space shaped by and for the community it serves.
“Kidderminster Town Hall shows how investment in heritage can enrich everyday life—creating a place that brings residents, businesses and visitors together, now and for the future.”
